Audio Tour Diavolezza

Intro

Dear Berninamassiv friend, dear mounain-friend, dear legend friend, welcome. We are very pleased that we are joining the five stations of the audio tour Diavolezza together and discover some of the mountain railway history, glaciology, winter sports  and a mountain fairy.

2. Tramway

The waiting times at the valley station were longer and longer. The mountain guide and ski instructor Paul Nauer from Pontresina was a pioneer, because he built a ski lift on the Firnfeld. Thus, the winter sportsmen did not always have to drive down to the valley to get back. In 1960, thanks to the ski lift, skiing was also possible during the summer. 40 summer, until the year 1998, was driven on the Diavolezza summer ski. Since 2007 the snow has been on the Firn. Packed in foil, the snow can be conserved and a lot of energy can be saved during the machine snowing.

4. Outlook platform

Thanks to a viewing platform with grid construction, the Bernina Group is close at hand and can be experienced by everyone. Around 1930, a glacier race was held high up on the Diavolezza. A total of 34 times a race like this was carried out in all weather or stormy winds. More than 300 participants and a high crowd of spectators took the ascent, because the mountain railway did not exist at that time. As a prize waved badge with devil face in gold, silver or bronze. In the 19th century, mountaineering gained in attractiveness. To make the climb more pleasant, mountain and shelters were built. In 1893, Christian Grass from Pontresina converted the former Diavolezza hut to the Berghaus for the first time with accommodation facilities.

1. Bottom station

Already around 1920 there was a railway project to the well-known mountain Diavolezza. In the course of time, the mountain gained more and more prominence. After a marathon permit of six years, the pendulum was able to operate with 50 seats. The guest engagement was so enormous, that three years later a new and larger cabin was used. Everyone wanted to get to the slopes to enjoy a glacier ride, but the guests took even two hours of waiting.

3. Mountain axe

Arrived at the top, 3000 m asl. Not only does the Berninamassiv fascinate us. For mountaineers and climbers, this area is a true festival hall of the Alps during the summer months. Above all the three-lobed Piz Palü and the famous Biancograt at the Piz Bernina. It is historically not quite sure who first climbed the Piz Palü, it was in 1835. The east summit, however, was climbed in 1866, financed by an Englishman. However, besides the magic of the eternal ice, dangers are also hidden, because the glacier clefts are also snow-covered in the summer. In some cases the dramatic accidents occurred when the glacier released the dead many years later. To this day the Berninamassiv has not lost any of its attractiveness and offers for active nature lovers a variety of possibilities with the most varied degrees of difficulty.

5. Panorama panel

Often the mountains are home to myths, so naturally also to Diavolezza, the beautiful Devil, which we will not withhold from you. High up on the Diavolezza lived a mountain fairy a long time ago. It was rarely seen by mountaineers or hikers, when you glided over the rocks into a rocky castle, guarded by a chamois herd. One man after another disappeared. Only when the glacier advanced down into the valley did the mountain fairy leave the area and was never seen again.
